Meet Julia Gasper, a British candidate for the European Parliament, who says Grindr should be banned, and likes to equate homosexuality with bestiality and pedophilia. The presumptive politician is so extreme that even Nigel Farage, the leader of Britain's extreme right UKIP party, has distanced himself from her (though he is opposed to same-sex marriage). The UK's Pink News reports today that Gasper has now suggested that Grindr should be banned after reports surfaced that public funds may have been used to book a hotel room used by Conservative MPS who advertised a sex party on Grindr during a 2011 conference in Manchester. "I call for the banning of Grindr and similar networks that damage public health,” she wrote on her blog last month, adding that there were "far too many homosexuals in Parliament."
This is not the first time Gasper has used her personal blog to articulate inflammatory ideas, and likely won't be the last. In 2010 she suggested that gay men and women should be grateful to heterosexuals for bringing them into the world instead of "complaining constantly of persecution.” After one newspaper investigated her asinine claims, in particular that some gays prefer sex with animals, she was forced to resign as chair of the Oxford branch of UKIP. Although Gasper has used her status to appeal to voters disaffected with mainstream parties, her chances of actually winning a seat in elections to the European Parliament scheduled for 22 May are next to nil.
