Electropop may have come and gone, fizzling out as a concept (maybe because it was never quite a momement but music writers tried to make it one) with only a few rock 'n' roll holdouts. And Peaches is definitely one of them. Long before Lady Gaga took weirdness to an artistic level on stage, Peaches was freaking out audiences around the world. But when did she have time to make a movie? And what is Peaches Does Herself?
It seems Peaches found her artistic home in Berlin and, specifically, at the city's cutting-edge Hebbel am Ufer Theater (HAU). Well the concert-theater film seems to be a record of a highbrow theater/art project, described as an "electro-rock opera" and an "anti-jukebox musical." Peaches wrote, directed, and starred in this beautiful, frightening, fantastical narrative based around her development as an artist and performer from “bedroom wannabe to fully fledged rock-stardom and beyond!”
As Peaches explains:
“Peaches Does Herself tells the story of a young woman who, inspired by a 65-year-old stripper, begins to make sexually forthright music. Her popularity grows and she becomes what her fans expect her to be: transsexual. She falls in love with a beautiful she-male, but gets her heart broken and then ventures on a path of self-discovery."
The production included a cast and crew of over 40 people and 20-plus songs from her back catalogue (The Teaches of Peaches, Fatherfucker, Impeach my Bush, I Feel Cream) and from the bizarre trailer footage, looks to be quite the sexual epic. The film will premiere October 18 in New York City at the Quad Cinemas.
