'Portlandia' Weighs In On Same-Sex Marriage

By Benjamin Lindsay

Not watching Portlandia yet? It’s about time you did. The Emmy-nominated hit IFC series premiered its third season earlier this month, and it’s been as quirkily appealing as ever.

Co-created and written by stars Fred Armisen—best known for his work on SNL—and Carrie Brownstein—best known for her time in indie band Sleater Kinney and her current project, Wild Flag— the sketch comedy series features little snippets of hipster hilarity while its stars adventure around Portland, OR. Sure, the premise is basic enough, but it’s heavy on the laughs and seems to relate to the painfully cool or P.C. in any city, whether it's Austin, Atlanta, Alberquerque.

This week’s episode features a gay wedding, but not in the way you might think. Same-sex marriage has been banned in Oregon since 2004 (despite the fact that rival neighbor to the north legalized it in 2012), and with tentative rumblings that a new gay marriage bill will be considered by the state, Portlandia tackles the issue head-on with cheeky wit. Watch the preview clip below:

The episode will also feature guest spots from Roseanne Barr and Out covergirl Chloë Sevigny—not to be missed! It premieres this Friday, Feb. 1 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on IFC.
