Which contestant had judge Nicki Minaj saying "Miss Lady" and "Work it, girl" during a guys' night on American Idol? That would be Chicago-based performer JDA, who left it all on the floor — literally — during his animated rendition of Adele's "Rumour Has It."
"I gotta represent for the gays, you know? I love the gays," said the 27-year-old cosmetics salesman after his Sudden Death Round performance Thursday night. No surprise that judges Keith Urban and Randy Jackson showed some visible discomfort with JDA's flamboyance, but host Ryan Seacrest appreciatively noted, "We haven't seen this much glitter since Adam Lambert's season on guys' night."
Unfortunately, JDA was asked to sashay away and didn't make the season 12 finals, but he gave the gay community another shout-out in his online exit interview: "Especially to the gay community, if you guys watched me and loved what I did, thank you. Thank you so much, because I did it for you. I do it for all the gays who struggle being who they are, and it’s OK to be you. Be you. And if you’re alone, if you’re lonely, and you only have yourself, just trust the voice within.”
And just in case there was still any doubt, JDA — also known as Josh Davila — confirms that he identifies as a gay man in an interview with Windy City Times. "Yes, I am a gay boy who is androgynous," he says. "I work for a cosmetics line that I can't help and indulge in. There is skin care to fragrance products. It is all feminine and I come full circle with that."
