The first trailer for July's Grown Ups 2 has been released, and it's got plenty of the gay panic humor we've come to expect from Adam Sandler comedies.
First you have Taylor Lautner, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Milo Ventimiglia as hot frat boys who bully the titular grown-ups — Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade, and Kevin James — into stripping naked and cliff-diving on top of each other. This bit ends with Spade yelling, "I was inside you!" to an equally horrified James. OK.
Then we see a preview of a car wash fundraiser scene with a group of effeminate male cheerleaders soaping each other up in tiny, tight shorts, which does have a certain appeal. Andy Samberg leads the pack with his Lonely Island cohorts Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, and sharp eyes will also pick out Saturday Night Live cast members and alums Taran Killam, Will Forte, Bobby Moynihan, and Paul Brittain, who gets used as a human sponge. Needless to say, Kevin James' character is grossed out, as if he hadn't been put through enough in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry!
Is this scene just good clean fun or offensively homophobic — particularly after Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Amy Pascal asked Hollywood to eliminate gay slurs and stereotypes from movies?
