Matthew Camp has quickly gone from being one of the hottest go-go boys in NYC to an indie film star, in-demand model, and burgeoning fashion icon with his own fragrance. (Hey, we didn’t name him one of our 13 to Watch in 2013 for nothing!) We caught up with Matt to see how his summer's heating up.
Gay.net: Your fragrance, 8.5, and new fashion line are exploding right now. What inspires you and how did you get started?
Matthew Camp: I'm most interested in designing lifestyle goods — anything from furnishings and clothing to wallpaper. I have custom leather pieces, t-shirts, and a fragrance on my website already. I love creating an emotional response, trying to illicit one with or without the permission of the viewer. I've had a lot of help from people I consider family. They really helped me to stay grounded and focus on what I really cared about. Shout out to Joe Netherworld for introducing me to the amazing Bailey Jay.
What's going on with your new movie, The Go Doc Project?
Lots of promo and film festivals. They're always so much fun but a little nerve-racking at the same time. I'm pretty shy and meeting so many people at once takes a lot out of me.
Where can we see all your art — including your tattoo art?
I'm always updating my site, and you can follow me on Instagram @MatthewCamp and Twitter @MatthewCampNYC to see what I'm up to all the time. I share a lot of my paintings, tattoo work, clothing... and there's a lot of topless gym pics too!
Now that you're becoming a big success in other areas, are you putting NYC nightlife behind you?
Not at all. I love NYC and its nightlife, but I think that nightlife in New York could use a change. It’s definitely migrated to the outer boroughs; my favorite place to party is Brooklyn, which is a very refreshing escape from the "beauty contest" that Manhattan can be sometimes.
What can we expect from you next?
Most of my upcoming projects are still secret, but you can expect some very stimulating videos and new products coming out in the future.
