Need evidence that gay men make the best modeling agents? Meet David Todd, president of DT Model Management. Since resigning as director of the men’s division at Nous Models to launch his own agency, taking along nearly every model he represented, Todd has created which has one of the strongest men’s board in Los Angeles, including superstar models Nick Youngquest and Chad White. Todd spoke to us about his agency's edge, his gay models, and why Naomi Campbell's totally better than Janice Dickinson.
Gay.net: What sets your agency and models apart from the rest?
David Todd: While most corporate type modeling agencies represent hundreds of models, my agency offers a more one on one style of personal representation. You are not just another number on the wall here. Quality not quantity is more our style. We have personal relationships with our clients and we work hard to get them to the next level fast. Our models are all unique and always stand out. Clients always say when boys walk in the room, they always know which guys are with DT. They have the look and personality that really shines bright.
What’s the male model look of 2013?
Slowly but surely, I think the super skinny toothpick look on a guy is going to die out. It seems like we are going back to what the models looked like in the ‘90s — like men! David Gandy has really started a trend bringing back that classic look. I am hoping that we start seeing more and more guys who are tall, dark, and handsome again.
Does your being gay gives you a sharper eye for male talent?
I think it definitely helps that I am gay! I’ve always said that gay guys make the best agents. We just have a certain flair that a straight person doesn't have. You’re either born with it, or you’re not. Thank God I got good creative genes from my mom! Thanks, mom!
You no doubt have gay male models on your roster. Can they be open about their sexuality in the modeling industry, or are they more likely to book jobs if they play it straight?
We definitely represent gay models. However, it's up to the model whether or not they want to disclose their sexuality to clients or photographers. We want our models to feel comfortable in their own skin. It doesn't matter if they are gay or straight, just that they are their true authentic selves. The great thing about our industry is that we are all so accepting of all types of models. These days even a model like Andrej Pejic can make it to the top, and he’s not the typical masculine model you’re used to seeing. The androgynous look has opened up a whole new world for those types of models, and it’s made our industry more interesting.
How do you feel about modeling reality shows like America’s Next Top Model and, back in the day, Janice Dickinson's Modeling Agency? And are you currently obsessed with Naomi Campbell on The Face?
The Janice Dickinson show was a complete joke. Nothing on that show was realistic about our business. Tyra's show was interesting for the first two seasons or so. I don't watch it anymore, but I give Tyra major credit for branding that show and making it so successful all around the world. She's a powerhouse. And yes, I am totally obsessed with Naomi and always have been. I remember the first time I saw her on the runway when I was in Milan for fashion week. That woman is so beautiful and commands the runway like no other supermodel. Everyone should take notes! I actually really like The Face. It's more realistic than any other model type of reality show that I've ever seen. It's Naomi! She is always going to bring it.
