About a month ago, Gays and Lesbians Allied Against Defamation (GLAAD) asked rapper Azealia Banks to meet with LGBT youth after she called gay blogger Perez Hilton "a messy faggot" on Twitter.
Yesterday, Ms. Banks responded to GLAAD's offer by calling them "fucking bullshit."
At the time of her f-bombing over a month ago, Banks said "A faggot is not a homosexual male. A faggot is any male who acts like a female. There's a BIG difference."
About a month later, she asked her Twitter followers to provide their definition of the word "faggot," and added:
"Here we go again. Everyone pretending to be so shocked and moved by the word faggot... It's like society is so bored with itself it needs to hold on to these outdated rules of what you can say and cannot say... Why has society accepted "ni**er" As a colloquialism ... But will not accept "faggot"? Everyones always acting like its f**king 1905 in this bitch. What is your definition of the word faggot? Faggot means coward, liar, backstabber...... Energy stealer, blood sucker... It's really time for a cultural shift. All these leftover old world social themes we're all still trying to hold on to are BOOORRIIING."
Yesterday she more or less said the same thing, stating, "I mean let's look at it, it's gay and lesbian alliance against defamation, or whatever…. that's what it stands for, right? I mean would you agree that homosexuals, and the homosexual community, have bigger problems than the word faggot, you know what I mean?"
She also said that in addition to being bisexual, saying faggot does not automtaically make her a homophobe.
Ms. Banks definitely used the word in a hateful way to shame another LGBT person. She's also trying to save face in light of the negative press over the word.
But is she right when she says that people need to stop getting outraged over "the f-word"?
Saying "faggot" has gotten a handful of pro-athletes in trouble, as well as a few openly gay celebs like Perez Hilton and Dan Savage. It's a slur that has been invoked as an insult on Twitter and in more than a few gay bashings in the real world.
But then again, it's only a word. Perhaps its better to consider the speaker's intent rather than pile onto anyone who says it. After all, a lot of gay people use the word as a synonym for anyone who is stupid or over-the-top flamboyant.
