Towleroad reports an ax-wielding attacker was kept in check at Phoenix Gay Bar thanks the heroic actions of a go-go boy and bartender.
On February 17, while at Oz bar, 40-year-old Lawrence Aquirre caused a scene when he began arguing with his girlfriend and became so unruly that bar manager Adrian Carlos Maldonado refused to serve him and escorted him out of the bar.
Aquirre then went to his car, retrieved and ax, forced his way back into the bar, and threatened to kill Maldonado. It was then a quick-thinking go-go boy grabbed the attacker from behind, holding him long enough for Maldonado to hit Aquirre over the head with a pool cue.
Dazed, the assailant dropped the weapon, allowing four patrons to rush in and subdue Aquirre until police arrived on the scene.
“It’s so weird that something like that happened but I was really happy everybody pulled together and helped me out with getting this guy on the ground and having him arrested,” Maldonado told Fox 10, “because this guy was crazy.”
Aguirre also reportedly used homophobic slurs while telling his own version of the events to police, a version where he insists he was the one assaulted in the bar.
