10 Things to Get Excited About in August

By Stacy Lambe

Elisabeth Moss, Laverne Cox, Matt Bomer and much more top our pop culture must-list for this month.

Spice World on Netflix

When it comes to camp, it’s hard to top the Spice Girls’ big screen debut featuring Alan Cumming as a documentary filmmaker, Meat Loaf as a tour bus driver, Rocky Horror Picture Show writer Richard O’Brien as a paparazzo, and cameos from Elton John and Stephen Fry. Thank goodness all the good (and extremely bad) can be relived on Netflix all month.

Ja’mie: Private School Girl on DVD

The bitch is back but let’s be real — was she ever gone? Ja’mie King has become a cult classic thanks to the passing around of DVD copies of Summer Heights High and the lesser-seen We Can Be Heroes. Now we can add a third series to the mix starting August 5.

FKA Twigs’ Debut Album, LP1

This experimental R&B sensation has been building a buzz all summer thanks to her delightful referential video for “Two Weeks.” If there was ever a time to call out her likeness to Aaliyah it was in a tribute video the songstress’ final film, Queen of the Damned. Now we get more than a song at a time thanks to her first full-length record hitting shelves on August 12.

America’s Next Top Model on The CW

Sure, with cycle 21 about to start it’s hard to believe this reality model competition series is still going but Tyra Banks mixed things up last season by introducing guys to the mix. This season she does the same and the results are delicious. With an extra pop of gay thanks to Miss Jay, the show is back to water cooler form starting August 18.

Movie Brunch: The One I Love and Love Is Strange

It’s hard to write about The One I Love without giving away the best part. We’ll just leave it at: Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss portray a couple that goes on a retreat in order to save their marriage in this wildly inventive comedy. Don’t read another thing about this movie. Just go see it in theaters on August 22.

Ira Sachs’ latest film, Love Is Strange, showcases the reality of aging gay couples in New York City. A demographic that’s often overlooked in pop culture gets their due in this touching film starring Alfred Molina (playing the stark opposite of his character in The Normal Heart) and John Lithgow. It’s a shame that Marisa Tomei is wasted but we nitpicking here. The film is in theaters the same weekend.

True Blood Series Finale

After all the blood, sex, bloody tears, “Soooooooookies,” werepanthers (eesh), shirtless Eric Northman, shirtless Alcide, shirtless Bill Compton, pantsless Jason Stackhouse, superb acting from Deborah Ann Woll, Sarah Newlin’s hooker heels to the head, maenads, and Lafayette’s sass HBO is putting the final stake in the series on Aug. 24.

The 2014 Emmys on NBC

In a historic year, Laverne Cox, Matt Bomer, Jim Parson, Jodie Foster, Jim Parsons, Sarah Paulson, and Ryan Murphy are all up for Emmys in major categories on Monday, Aug. 25. Outside of that, there are the red carpets, the speeches and the live-tweeting.

The Normal Heart on Blu Ray/DVD

Coming off what potentially is a groundbreaking night for LGBT entertainers is the DVD release of HBO’s film adaptation of The Normal Heart. After finally making it to the (small) screen, the film found an audience with a brand new generation. Flawed? Yes. But the film warrants repeat viewing.

Grind: The Movie Soundtrack

What happens when you turn the world of Grindr into a musical? Well you get an Anthony Rapp-written, produced, and starring production that cuts at the core of all the nonsense sexting and flips it on its head. Now fans can enjoy a soundtrack of sexting and ambiguity on repeat starting Aug. 26.
