'Little Monsters' Call for Madonna Boycott, Respond to Backlash

By Brandon Voss

It was recently announced that Madonna will present Anderson Cooper with the Vito Russo Award, given to openly gay media professionals who have contributed to the fight for equality, at the GLAAD Awards Mar. 16 in New York City. Unfortunately, not everyone's freaking out in a good way.

Ready for a good eye roll? This open letter to GLAAD is becoming a thing:

"Dear GLAAD:

"It has come to the attention to Little Monsters everywhere that you are letting Madonna give an award to Anderson Cooper. Not only is this an insult to a true gay rights activist like Lady Gaga, but it insults every gay man and woman on this planet.

"Madonna is one of the major reasons for AIDS. Back in the 1980’s, she encouraged gay men to have unprotected sex. While she certainly didn’t start the disease, she and her lack of morals helped it spread.

"Please rethink your choice of having Madonna as a presenter. If you don’t, we Little Monsters will strike back in a way you won’t like.

"Lady Gaga’s Little Monsters"

Are Gaga's little monsters really about to transform into Hulks over this non-controversy? ("You won't like me when I'm angry!") Hardly. This basically boils down to one very young "little monster" posting an open letter on her personal blog and claiming that she speaks for millions. The self-described "massive Lady Gaga fan" has also posted a response to the overnight backlash:

I can't believe how much media attention my recent blog on Madonna giving Anderson Cooper a GLAAD award has received. A lot of people are angry. They have sent me videos and pictures of Madonna promoting safe sex and defending AIDS victims.

I wasn't born then, but understand that in the mid and late 1980's, things were really tough on the gay community. Madonna, perhaps, was pretty brave in taking the positions she did. She was also smart and realized, perhaps before anyone else, that gays and lesbians make a great marketing group. She targeted gays like Disney targets kids.

Here's the problem: Even if Madonna was brave, her actions hurt her braveness and hurt the gay community. By telling people it's okay to go out and screw everything on this planet, she helped spread AIDS. Did she do it intentionally? Probably not. But her actions speak loud and gay people dropped like flies. She isn't the only one responsible, but she was at the forefront.

Lady Gaga is very responsible with her fans. She tells them not to get pregnant, not to do drugs and not to bully others. She is a role model. Madonna has always been the anti role model.

This foolishness doesn't really warrant any additional response, and Madonna sure as hell doesn't need anyone to defend her or her work with AIDS charities, but it does seem like a good opportunity to see where our readers stand on the fundamental issue here: Are you Team Madonna or Team Gaga? Yes, Sophie, you have to choose!
