WATCH: The Best (and Not So Best) of LGBT Chorus Holiday Music

By Christopher Harrity

In cities around the world, both gay men's choruses and mixed LGBT choral groups have established themselves as holiday traditions. These 12 selections range from heart-rending to eye rolling. But it wouldn't be the holidays without them.

Plus: A bonus selection at the end — the most moving of all.

12.  "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's Messiah — Gay Men's Chorus South Florida (2012)
It's great to hear the most classic Christmas song of all. Always powerful and always moving. Thanks, GMC South Florida.

11. "In the Spirit" — The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus Christmas Concert (2012)
This is the first of the more challenging holiday numbers. Pardon the camera work, since Aunt Sophie may have had too many hot toddies before the night began. And c'mon, gays, we can make better elf costumes than that.

10. "Black Christmas" — Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, D.C. (2012)
This is what we're talkin' about, folks. Sweet, funny, and original. We are the unexpected voice.

9. "Chanukah in Santa Monica" — The Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles (2011)
Right on! Remember this season is more than a birthday party and you will laugh out loud.

8. "Christmas Greetings" — Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir (2013)
Congratulations to our Aussie friends on recent marriage equality rulings! In this video, they rub our noses in the fact that Christmas happens in summer Down Under.

7. "Ring Christmas Bells" — Gloria Dublin's Lesbian and Gay Choir (2010)
OK, besides the "Hallelujah Chorus," this one is our favorite. And this is a beautiful version.

6. "Someday at Christmas": San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus (2007)
Why do we well up every time we hear a bunch of gay men singing in harmony?

5. "Coming Out at Christmas" — London Gay Men's Chorus (2006)
Awesomely professional — and dear lord, there are so many of them. Don't miss this upbeat, witty holiday song.

4. "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" — Columbus Gay Men's Chorus (2011)
This one made us slightly uncomfortable. Even the chorus looks uncomfortable.

3. "With Bells On" — Chicago Gay Men's Chorus (2012)
Big and nelly and delightful. Lots of heel-to-toe action. Well done, boys.

2. "Santa Baby" — Seattle Men's Chorus (2009)
OK, not sure who the chanteuse is, but who is looking?

1. "North Pole Rock & Roll" — S.F. Gay Men's Chorus (2012)
Great song, well done. But the best thing is that drunk Aunt Sophie wasn't holding the camera. Well shot.

Encore: "Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth" — Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles (2012)
On the day following the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., 46 students from the Creative Planet School of the Arts harmonized onstage with the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles. This performance was dedicated to the families in Newtown and to everyone whose lives are changed forever by violence.
