Want to Help a Gay Film Become First To Win Social Work Award?

By Jase Peeples

Chinese-American Director Albert M. Chan’s The Commitment, has been nominated for a 2013 National Association of Social Workers Media Award in the category of Best Feature Film.

The film will be competing with the two additional films nominated for the award, What To Expect When You’re Expecting (starring Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, and Dennis Quaid) as well as the Oscar-nominated Moonrise Kingdom (starring Bruce Willis, Ed Norton, Bull Murray, Frances McDormand, and Tilda Swinton).

The Commitment tells the story of Robert (Albert Chan) and Ethan (Jason Lane Fenton), a gay interracial couple who work to overcome many obstacles after being chosen by a pregnant woman to adopt her baby. The film was inspired by the real-life experiences of Chan and his husband of seven years after when they decided to expand their family through adoption.

“We went through a lot of ups and downs during the adoption process, so a lot of the movie is based on what actually happened,” Chan says. A universal love story about a couple and the trying circumstances that test their bond, The Commitment is already being celebrated for furthering the visibility of LGBT parents and their diverse families.

The Commitment has already received several awards and could make history as the first LGBT-themed film to win the National Association of Social Workers Media Award for Best Feature Film — with a little help from fans. The public can cast votes for the film until March 15 at Socialworkersspek.org.
