Tell Pat Robertson to 'Stuff It,' Says Columnist

By Trudy Ring

In light of Pat Robertson’s most recent antigay rant — claiming gay men spread HIV by shaking hands while wearing rings with sharp edges — it’s time for other religious leaders to stand up to homophobia, says Washington Post columnist Jonathan Capehart.

Capehart, who is gay, made the statement Thursday on Martin Bashir’s MSNBC show, guest-hosted by Joy Reid. He noted that Robertson might be a filterless, kooky old coot clinging to homophobic, sexist, and misogynistic views like a life preserver in the 19th century. … But he’s still a coot with inexplicable clout in some quarters.”

“It’s not enough for me to condemn Robertson, or for Anderson Cooper to eviscerate him with well-played sarcastic contempt,” Capehart continued. “What’s needed is for religious leaders emboldened by the Good Book’s teachings of love thy neighbor to tell Robertson, in no uncertain terms, to stuff it.”

Watch the video below, in which Capehart also notes how he registered his objections to homophobic language in a minister’s eulogy for his aunt.
