Oscar, Can You Hear Me? Streisand to Perform at Academy Awards

By Christopher Rudolph

It looks like Barbra Streisand has finally learned to taste the sweet side of the spotlight. After fighting stage fright for years, she undertook a rare concert tour last year in support of her Release Me album, and now she has agreed to sing on this year's Oscars telecast.

Streisand hasn’t graced the Oscars with her golden pipes since the 1977 Academy Awards, when she sang "Evergreen," the theme from A Star Is Born, for which she won the Best Original Song Oscar later that evening. While she has been nominated since then (in the song category for The Mirror Has Two Faces and for producing Best Picture nominee The Prince of Tides), she didn’t perform at either ceremony. Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, the gay duo producing this year’s Oscars (they also produced a TV movie of Gypsy starring Bette Midler and the big-screen version of Chicago), seemed to already have a memorable evening on their hands with Seth MacFarlane hosting and Adele singing her Oscar-nominated ballad "Skyfall{ before adding Streisand to the event.

The 85th Academy Awards airs Sunday, February 24, on ABC. Watch the last time Streisand sang at the Oscars below:
